What is Laser Cutting?
Laser cutting is a precise method of cutting a design from a given material using a CAD file as guidance.
This technology uses a high-powered laser to melt, burn, or vaporize the material, resulting in a sharp, clean cut with a high-quality finish.
Laser cutting is versatile, capable of cutting through various materials, including metals, making it ideal for a wide range of industrial applications.
Benefits of Laser Cutting
The benefits of laser cutting are vast, including unmatched precision, flexibility in cutting shapes and designs, and a high-quality finish with minimal need for secondary processing. Here are some examples:
Laser cutting makes it possible to create complex parts with challenging dimensions from raw material. With a dimensional accuracy of approximately 0.0005 inches, this machining process is far more precise than traditional cutting methods.
With traditional cutting tools, surface edges may be left jagged. Since laser cutting leverages heat, it will melt the material while creating smooth edges.
Laser-cutting machines have a laser beam directed through a nozzle guided by a Computer Numerical Control, or CNC, system. Unlike traditional machining methods that utilize many hard-cutting devices to get the job done, laser-cutters don’t need to change tooling.
High travel speeds and deep penetration capabilities mean laser cutting is incredibly efficient. Typical travel speeds for production laser cutting processes can reach 10 meters per minute.
The high-powered laser can handle a variety of materials. Examples include carbon steel, aluminum, copper, stainless steel, and titanium.
There’s a common misconception that the heat from laser cutting causes distortion. In fact, the laser cuts so quickly that the material doesn’t become excessively hot and warp. As a result, the Heat Affected Zone, or HAZ, is very small and typically creates no issues with the part’s tolerance.
Parts with intricate shapes or details are perfect for laser-cutting machines. The laser can be used to work on very narrow sections of material, causing minimal warping or distortion to the cut area.
Although laser-cutters excel at cutting material, they can do so much more. Lasers can also be used for drilling, marking, and engraving, all without replacing or switching any tooling.
With the enhanced precision and accuracy of laser cutting, more areas of the workpiece can be utilized. A laser-cutter can increase the number of usable components and parts produced from a sheet of material by nesting cuts properly. The result is lower material costs, savings that North Shore Steel happily passes along to customers.
