Mangalloy® Manganese Steel: High Impact Plate & Bar

Mangalloy® steel is a high-manganese alloy, typically containing 11–14% manganese, designed for applications involving severe impact and shock loading.

Under repeated impact, Mangalloy® work-hardens, significantly increasing surface hardness while retaining a tough, ductile core. This behavior makes it well suited for applications where impact dominates wear rather than abrasion alone.

What Makes Mangalloy® Different

Mangalloy® is designed specifically for high-impact environments where conventional abrasion-resistant plate may crack or fail.

Key Characteristics

  • Work-hardening surface under shock and impact
  • Retained internal toughness to resist cracking
  • High tensile strength for dynamic environments
  • Non-magnetic properties
  • Polished surface finish developed in service

Mangalloy® High Manganese Steel Plate

High-Manganese Steel Plate (11–14% Mn)

Mangalloy® plate typically begins at approximately 200 BHN and can work-harden to approximately 550 BHN under repeated impact.

Common Mangalloy® Applications

  • Crusher liners and breaker plates
  • Jaw plates and rock screens
  • Grizzly bars and hoppers
  • Shot blast and wheelabrator liners
  • Perforated plates and step lips
  • Non-magnetic wear applications

Mangalloy® Processing Considerations

Mangalloy® behaves differently than abrasion-resistant wear plate and requires application-aware handling.

Cutting: Plasma, laser, waterjet, or oxy-fuel

Forming: Cold bending and cold roll forming

Machining: Carbide or cobalt tooling recommended due to work hardening

Welding: Manganese-to-manganese: manganese alloy electrodes

Dissimilar metals: stainless electrodes (308 / 309 / 310)

Mangalloy® Steel Bars

Mangalloy® bars are commonly used in metal-on-metal and high-impact contact zones where toughness and work hardening improve service life.

Common Mangalloy®  Applications

  • Shovel bucket pins
  • Crusher hammer build-up
  • Grizzly bars
  • Dredge and conveyor chain pins
  • Shredder and breaker bars
  • Bucket hinge pins
  • Shot blast hangers
  • Security and impact bars

Typical Material Properties

Mechanical (typical):

  • Initial hardness: ~200 BHN
  • Work-hardened surface: up to ~550 BHN
  • Tensile strength: ~145,000 PSI
  • Yield strength: ~55,000 PSI

Properties may vary by heat and product form.

Chemical (typical):

  • Carbon: ~1.13%
  • Manganese: ~13.0%
  • Silicon: ~0.38%

Is Mangalloy® Right for Your Application?

Mangalloy® is best suited for applications involving repeated heavy impact, shock loading, or metal-on-metal contact. If abrasion is the dominant wear mechanism with minimal impact, a Wearalloy® abrasion-resistant plate may be a better option.
