CNC Plasma Cutting Services
North Shore Steel offers CNC plasma cutting services for companies looking to cut high-definition plate parts. Our 400 AMP Hypertherm high-definition plasma cutting machines are top-of-the-line and can produce anything from basic shapes to complex parts. Plasma cutting services are typically twice as fast as other cutting services and require fewer steps. This technique does not require the materials to be preheated, saving time and energy. While the process isn’t as precise as waterjet cutting, it is more cost-effective when cutting steel plate and materials up to 1-1/2" thick.
What is Plasma Cutting?
Plasma cutting is an electrical process that works with conductive materials like steel and other specialty metals. Plasma forms when gases are heated, they become ionized and electrically conductive. This same process happens in a plasma cutting machine when a gas, such as oxygen, nitrogen, or shop air, is forced through a nozzle. The external power supply of the plasma machine sends an electric current to the gas flow to ionize it, creating a plasma arc. The arc cuts the material by melting it and blowing the molten metal away.
Benefits of CNC Plasma Cutting
CNC plasma cutting machines are run by adaptive computers that are programmed to produce consecutive cut quality and increase the speed of production. You can arrange the shapes you want on a computer screen, and the computer will tell the machine to cut the metal automatically without anyone having to touch the material.

Shapes Formed by CNC Plasma Cutting
North Shore Steel has the ability to cut plate using our plasma cutting machines into the shape you need for your application. Our CNC plasma cutters have a cone-shaped stream that offers precision or accurate cutting. The cutters allow the machine to cut different shapes, angles, and sizes with sheet metal.
The CNC plasma cutters can cut ferrous and non-ferrous metals such as:
- Stainless Steel
- Carbon Steel
- Other Specialty Metals
The cutter can rapidly produce high temperatures making it quicker to cut metals, getting the job done in one-fourth the amount of time it takes other cutting machines. The process does not require a preheating treatment before cutting materials, saving time and energy.
Common Applications and Industries
Typically, CNC plasma cutting applications are used in industries such as:
- Military & Aerospace
- Commercial fabrication
