What is Waterjet Cutting?

Waterjet cutting is a cold cutting process where a jet of water, or a mix of abrasive substance and water, slices into metal at a high pressure and high velocity. The process is a concentrated and accelerated version of erosion in nature. The cutter is connected to a high-pressure water pump that sends high velocity water through the nozzle.

There are two different types of CNC waterjet machines, pure and abrasive. Pure waterjet machines primarily cut with a high pressurized stream of water compared to the abrasive waterjet machine that combines abrasive substances, and the high pressurized stream of water to cut harder materials. Pure waterjet machines are ideal for plastics, papers, cement, food, foam, and insulations. The abrasive waterjet machines are more favorable for cutting materials like composites, stones, some types of glass, ceramics, and metals.

Benefits of Waterjet Cutting

The benefit of a waterjet cutting machine is its ability to cut metals without changing the structure of the material because there is no heat affected area. Waterjet cutting does not harm or change the material's intrinsic properties.

Shapes Formed by Waterjet Cutting

North Shore Steel has the ability to cut plate using our waterjet cutting machine into the shape you need for your application. CNC waterjet cutting machines are versatile and have the ability to cut a variety of shapes and sizes. Since there is no stress or heat, the machine can produce smooth edges and narrow cuts. Depending on the waterjet machine services, there is the possibility of cutting sharp corners, holes, and complex shapes.
